Explosion at Leverkusen Chemical Plant
16 Injured, Investigation Underway

An explosion at a chemical plant in Leverkusen, Germany, on Tuesday, July 27, 2021, injured at least 16 people, four of whom are reported to be in serious condition. The blast occurred at the Currenta waste disposal center north of the city center at 09:40 local time (07:40 GMT).
The shockwave from the explosion was felt as far away as a measuring station in Hespertal, about 40 kilometers (25 miles) north of Leverkusen. The cause of the explosion is still under investigation.
Leverkusen is home to Bayer, one of Germany's largest chemical manufacturers. The city, with a population of around 163,000, is located 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) north of Cologne.
The explosion serves as a reminder of the potential dangers associated with chemical manufacturing. The authorities are continuing to investigate the incident and are working to ensure the safety of the surrounding community.
