South Korea's Liberal Opposition Wins Landslide in General Election

Former Prosecutor Yoon Suk-Yeol Elected President

April 10, 2022

Seoul, South Korea - In a major political upset, South Korea's liberal opposition party, the Democratic Party, has won a landslide victory in the country's general election held on April 10.

The Democrats secured a majority of seats in the National Assembly, the country's parliament, ending the conservative People Power Party's nine-year rule. The win is seen as a major setback for outgoing President Moon Jae-in and his administration.

The Democratic Party's victory was led by former prosecutor Yoon Suk-Yeol, who was elected as South Korea's next president in a separate election held on the same day. Yoon's victory was a surprise, as he was trailing in the polls prior to the election.

"This is a victory of the great South Korean people," Yoon said in his victory speech. "I will work hard to build a fair and just society for all Koreans."

The Democrats' landslide victory is a significant shift in South Korean politics. It is expected to lead to a major change in the country's foreign and domestic policies.
