Borussia Dortmund's Dismal Champions League Quarter-Final Record Continues
Eight Losing Away Matches and Five Consecutive Quarter-Final Losses
Dortmund's Woes in Europe's Elite Competition
Borussia Dortmund's struggles in the UEFA Champions League reached a new low as they suffered their fifth consecutive quarter-final defeat. The latest setback came against Atletico Madrid, who emerged victorious in a hard-fought contest.
The Black and Yellows have now lost their last eight away matches in the Champions League quarter-finals, a testament to their inability to perform on the big stage. Their last away win in this round of the competition came against Arsenal in the 2016/17 season.
Dortmund reached the quarter-finals for the first time in three years, but their hopes of advancing were quickly extinguished. After losing the first leg 2-0 at home, they were unable to mount a comeback and succumbed to a 2-1 defeat in the second leg at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium.
Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone praised Dortmund as "the hardest opponent we have faced this season," highlighting the team's strong performance despite the eventual result. However, Dortmund's failure to progress to the semi-finals will leave them with much to ponder as they seek to turn their fortunes around in Europe.
With the Champions League campaign now over, Dortmund will shift their focus to the Bundesliga, where they currently sit fourth in the standings. They will be hoping to secure a top-four finish to ensure their return to European competition next season.
